How to Insert and Remove a Menstrual Cup: Step-by-Step Guide

Menstrual cups have become increasingly popular over the years as a sustainable, cost-effective, and comfortable alternative to tampons and pads. However, for those new to menstrual cups, inserting and removing them may seem daunting. In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through how to insert and remove a GENTLE DAY menstrual cup.

Step 1: Wash your hands

Before handling your menstrual cup, make sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. This will help prevent the spread of bacteria and infection.

Step 2: Wet the cup

Wet the cup with water or water-based lubricant for smoother insertion.

Step 3: Fold the cup

There are several ways to fold your menstrual cup, but the most common is the "C-fold." To do this, press the rim of the cup together to create a "C" shape. This will make it easier to insert. There are many other folding methods you can read about here.

Step 4: Insert the cup

Find a comfortable position, such as squatting or sitting on the toilet. Gently insert the folded GENLTE DAY cup into your vagina, with the open end facing upwards. It may take a few tries to find the right angle and position, but once inserted correctly, the cup should sit low in your vaginal canal, just past your pubic bone.

Step 5: Ensure a proper seal

Once the cup is inserted, use your fingers to ensure that it has fully opened and created a seal against the vaginal walls. You can do this by gently twisting the cup or running a finger around the base of the cup.

Step 6: Wear the cup

Your menstrual cup can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on your flow. It's important to check it regularly, especially during heavy flow days, to avoid leakage. To prevent leaks you can wear your GENTLE DAY cup together with our Period panties, or use a GENTLE DAY cotton panty liner with a patented anion strip.

Step 7: Remove the cup

To remove the cup, gently pull the stem until you can reach the base of the cup. Pinch the base of the cup to release the seal and slowly pull it out. Make sure to keep the cup upright to avoid spilling the contents.

Step 8: Empty and clean the cup

Once removed, empty the contents of the cup into the toilet or sink. Rinse the cup with cold water first, then wash it with warm water and mild, unscented soap. Make sure to thoroughly clean all the crevices and the stem. Rinse the cup again with cold water and reinsert. In case there is no water available (while traveling) GENTLE DAY unscented intimate wipes are safe to use to wipe your cup.

Step 9: Sterilize the cup

It is recommended to disinfect your GENTLE DAY cup by boiling it for 5 min after each cycle.

Step 10: Store the cup

When not in use, store your menstrual cup in a breathable cotton bag provided or container, away from direct sunlight and heat. Make sure to sterilize the cup before and after each menstrual cycle.
