Preparing for a First Period
As a mom, I know how meaningful (and sometimes overwhelming) the transition into puberty can be — for both girls and their parents. My advice is simple: make it a shared experience. Pick out the first 'period kit' together — let her choose the style of panties or the products she feels most comfortable with. Letting her choose what feels right for her can help build confidence from the start.
First Period Checklist
- Keep a few period essentials in a school bag or backpack.
- Choose comfortable, breathable underwear and clothing.
- Track periods on a calendar or app to start recognising cycle patterns.
- Remember that irregular cycles are common in the beginning.
- Ask questions whenever you need to — periods are a normal part of life.
A Note for Moms
You don't need to have the perfect conversation about periods. Often, the most meaningful conversations happen naturally, while spending time together or during everyday moments.
